Piper Duddles has Genetically Caused
Atypical Autism
Meet Piper. To anyone who doesn't know her, they may think she is like any other 3.5 year old, but she isn't. Piper has Autism and Sensory Perception Disorder caused by a genetic disorder. We noticed the changes started when she turned 18 months old, at which point she began acting deaf.
She is currently in speech therapy, physical therapy, structured learning, and occupational therapy; we partake in activities which help her work on her other issues, such as texture problems, oversensitivity to sounds, social interactions, etc. One "activity" we have found that helps her the most in EVERY area is dogs. Since Piper's grandmother, Mimi, moved in to help us along with her dog, Teddy, Piper began speaking again. We saw a change in her that was night and day. We are currently working on training her puppy, Dugan, as a service dog for her.
We would like to share our experiences to help others understand, or potentially avoid, some of the heartbreak associated with the genetic disorder MHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). (With a name like that, you will see why everyone calls it MTHFR).

Just as snowflakes are unique, no 2 Autistic children are exactly alike. Because Autism affects the brain, each child reacts differently. I've included links for those who want statistics and more information about Autism in general. I am writing about how Autism affects my daughter. This is Piper's story...
